Mills Park Middle School
Mrs. Goktan - 2020-2021
Course Curriculum/Objectives:
We will explore a variety of ancient civilizations in this class, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Ancient Americas, India, China, Japan and Korea. We will gain an appreciation of these ancient cultures within the framework of geography; religion; achievement; and political, government, economic, and social structures. Finally, our year will end with our exploration of The Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation unit.
Curriculum Focus:
Think GRAPES to remember the focus of our curriculum:
Geography / Religion / Achievements / Politics / Economics / Social Structures
Supplies:
*Pencils (several) and Colored Pencils
*Loose Leaf Lined Paper
*3-Ring Binder - Only needed if we return to in-class instruction sometime this year.
Homework:
Homework will not be generally assigned in our virtual academy format since we will complete the majority of our work in each 55-minute class period. However, it is my expectation that anything not completed during class will need to be completed by students independently. Extra independent work may also need to be assigned to complete any long-term project, in addition to reviewing for quizzes and tests.
MPMS Grading Scale:
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 59 and below
Grading:
MPMS uses a point system for all grades. Each assignment will be given a point value as follows: tests (25-50 points), projects (1-20 points), quizzes (1-10 points), classwork (1-15 points), and homework (1 point). I update PowerSchool at least once a week. If an assignment is missing, a zero will be awarded until the work is turned in. At the end of each quarter, grade percentages will be determined by dividing the number of points earned by the total number of possible points. In previous years, I had approximately 100 points each quarter; however, with our new virtual academy format, this number may be slightly different.
Getting to Know Me!
Welcome to a challenging and rewarding year at Mills Park Middle School! I am so excited to begin a new school year and meet my wonderful new group of sixth graders. This will be my ninth year teaching 6th grade social studies. It is also my fifth year at MPMS and my fourteenth year teaching in Wake County. In 2005, I moved to Cary from San Jose, California, with my husband and two children. Both my son and daughter have since graduated from college and left home. In addition to spending as much time as possible with my family, I love to read, enjoy the outdoors, and travel. Last summer I had the chance to visit Ireland, and I consider myself somewhat of a world traveler. I have lived many years overseas, including in Puerto Rico, Italy, and Turkey, but I am now very happy to call North Carolina home. I cannot wait to share the amazing history of the ancient world with my students and share my passion for the past!
The best way to contact me is by email. I will do my best to respond to all emails within a 24-hour period. We are going to have an amazing learning experience this year in social studies. Thank you for everything you do!
